Priority Processing for Construction Skills Assessments with Trades Recognition Australia

In an effort to support Australia's booming construction industry, the Australian Government has introduced significant changes to fast-track and prioritise skills assessments for construction related occupations.

Trades Recognition Australia (TRA) has streamlined the process, making it easier and faster for qualified individuals to get their skills assessed and recognised. Here's what you need to know.

Key Changes in Skills Assessment

1. Streamlined Assessments: From 31 July 2024, the TRA has removed the mandatory Offshore Skills Assessment Program (OSAP) requirement for specific occupations and low-risk countries. This change allows applicants with relevant qualifications to opt for the Migration Skills Assessment (MSA), a simpler and more affordable in-house assessment by TRA.

2. Prioritised Occupations: TRA has identified a range of construction occupations eligible for prioritisation and streamlined processing. These occupations include Bricklayer, Cabinetmaker, Carpenter, Carpenter and Joiner, Joiner, and Welder (First Class). Each of these roles is essential to the construction industry and now benefits from expedited assessment processes.

3. Eligible Countries: Applicants from certain countries are eligible for streamlined assessments. These countries include China, Iran, Ireland, Republic of Korea, Sri Lanka, United Arab Emirates, and the United Kingdom. This initiative aims to reduce the processing time and costs for skilled workers from these nations.

Benefits of Streamlined Assessments

Reduced Costs and Time: The new streamlined process significantly reduces both the time and cost associated with obtaining a skills assessment. This is particularly beneficial for applicants with relevant qualifications who can now bypass the more complex OSAP.

Support for the Construction Industry: By fast-tracking assessments for key construction roles, the Australian Government aims to address skill shortages and support the construction industry's growth. This initiative ensures that qualified tradespeople can quickly enter the workforce, contributing to vital infrastructure projects.

Compliance with Licensing Requirements: It's important to note that some states and territories require additional licensing or registration to work in specific construction occupations. Applicants should verify these requirements with the relevant local authorities to ensure compliance.
