What happens in a consultation

A consultation is a working session, not a sales call. You talk, we listen, and then we map out where you stand.

  1. We hear your situation. Your goals, your history, your deadlines and anything that has already gone wrong, such as a refusal or cancellation.
  2. We explain your options. Which visas or review pathways may be open to you, what each involves, and the risks and trade-offs, in plain English.
  3. We map the process. The steps, the evidence you will need, the likely timeframes and the deadlines that matter.
  4. We quote a fixed fee. If you want us to act, we agree the scope and the fee up front, so you know the cost before any work begins.

There is no obligation to go further. Many people leave a consultation with everything they need to decide their next step.

What to bring

You do not need to prepare anything formal, but these details make the consultation more useful:

  • Your passport and current visa details, including any expiry dates.
  • Any refusal or cancellation letters, and the date you received them. Deadlines for review can be as short as 28 days, so tell us the date straight away.
  • For partner and family matters, details of your sponsor and relevant family members.
  • For work visas, your occupation, qualifications and employer details.
  • Any previous applications, correspondence with Home Affairs, or Tribunal proceedings.

If you are an employer, our free employer strategy call may be a better first step. It comes with a short form that lets you outline the roles you are trying to fill.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Should I book with Tina or Ivana?

Both are senior lawyers who take consultations on the full range of migration matters. Tina Nematian is our founder and Principal Lawyer; Ivana Djoneski is our Immigration Practice Lead. Choose whoever has the time that suits you, and read their profiles on our team page if you would like to know more first.

Can I have my consultation by video call?

Yes. Consultations are in person at our Sydney or Melbourne office, or by video call for clients anywhere in Australia. The advice is the same either way, so choose whichever is easier for you.

What does a consultation cost?

The consultation fee is confirmed when you book, before you commit. If you engage us for further work after the consultation, we agree a fixed fee in writing before anything begins, so you always know the cost up front.

My visa was refused. Can a consultation help?

Yes, and timing matters. Most onshore refusals carry a 28-day window to apply to the Administrative Review Tribunal, and the Tribunal cannot extend it. Bring your decision letter and the date you received it, and we will tell you whether review is open and what the realistic options are. Our appeals page explains the process.

I am an employer. Is a consultation the right first step?

If you want to talk through sponsorship, nominations, labour agreements or DAMA, request a free employer strategy call instead. It is designed for businesses and starts with a short form about the roles you are trying to fill.

What can you advise on in a consultation?

The full range of Australian migration matters: employer sponsored and skilled visas, partner and family visas, student visas, humanitarian and protection visas, refusals, cancellations, appeals and ministerial intervention. If your matter needs a different kind of professional, we will tell you plainly.
