People Also Ask About Employer Sponsorship

An employer sponsored visa allows an Australian business to sponsor a skilled overseas worker to fill a role they cannot find a qualified local candidate for. The main subclasses are the 482 (Skills in Demand), 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme), and 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional).

Total employer costs typically range from $5,000 to over $15,000 depending on the visa subclass and business size. This includes the sponsorship application ($420), nomination fee ($330), Skilling Australians Fund levy ($1,200 to $1,800 per year), and the visa application fee paid by the worker.

The Core Skills income threshold sits at approximately $73,150 per year. For the Specialist Skills pathway, the threshold is $135,000. Employers must also meet the Annual Market Salary Rate for the role and location.

Yes. Most 482 visa holders can apply for permanent residency through the Employer Nomination Scheme (subclass 186) after working for their sponsor for two years. Under 2026 reforms, this pathway has expanded significantly.

Employers must ensure the worker is employed in their nominated occupation, paid at the agreed salary, given equivalent conditions to local staff, keep records for five years, and notify Home Affairs of changes within 28 days.

The full process typically takes 3 to 9 months. Business sponsorship approval takes 1 to 3 months, nomination 1 to 4 months, and the visa application 1 to 6 months depending on the stream.

Sponsored workers now have 180 days (with a 365-day lifetime cap) to find a new sponsor. The departing employer must notify Home Affairs within 28 days of the worker ceasing employment.

Formal labour market testing is no longer a separate requirement. However, employers must pass the genuine position test, demonstrating the role is real and necessary for the business.

Yes. Small businesses face closer scrutiny on the genuine position test and financial capacity but can sponsor under the same visa subclasses as larger companies.

The 482 is a temporary visa (up to four years). The 186 grants permanent residency. Many workers start on a 482 and transition to a 186 after two years with their sponsor.
