Skills assessment Australia guide for migration visa applicants

Skills Assessment Australia: Which Assessment Body You Need and How to Apply (2026 Guide)

Find out which skills assessment body you need for your Australian visa, what it costs, how long it takes, and what to do if your assessment is negative. 2026 guide.

What Is a Skills Assessment and Why Do You Need One?

A skills assessment is a formal evaluation conducted by an Australian Government-designated authority. It confirms that your qualifications, work experience, and professional skills meet Australian standards for your nominated occupation.

Think of it as Australia’s way of verifying that the degree you earned overseas, and the years of experience you’ve built, genuinely match what an Australian-trained professional in the same role would have. The Department of Home Affairs requires this assessment before you can lodge most skilled visa applications.

Without a positive skills assessment, your visa application will be refused. It’s not optional for most pathways, and it’s not something you can sort out after you’ve applied. You need the outcome in hand before you lodge.

At One Planet Migration Law, our principal lawyer Tina Nematian has guided hundreds of skilled migrants through this exact process. This guide breaks down everything you need to know about skills assessments in Australia for 2026, from finding your assessing authority to handling a negative outcome.

Which Visas Require a Skills Assessment?

Not every Australian visa requires a skills assessment, but most skilled migration pathways do.

Visas Where a Skills Assessment Is Mandatory

Visas Where a Skills Assessment May Be Required

  • Subclass 482 (Skills in Demand visa) — Most 482 occupations do not require one. However, around 25 trade occupations do. We’ve written a detailed breakdown of mandatory skills assessments for the Skills in Demand visa.
  • Subclass 186 (Employer Nomination Scheme visa) — Required for the Direct Entry stream. If transitioning from a 482 through the Employer Nomination Scheme Temporary Residence Transition stream, you may not need one.
  • Subclass 494 (Skilled Employer Sponsored Regional visa) — Required for the Employer Sponsored stream.

Skills Assessment Exemptions for the 482 Visa

  1. You already hold a subclass 457 or 482 visa with the same sponsor in the same occupation.
  2. You hold a relevant Australian qualification matching the ANZSCO skill level.
  3. You’re an intra-company transferee.
  4. You’ve completed an OSAP assessment through TRA.
  5. You’re nominated by an Accredited Sponsor, earning at least AUD $180,000, and hold a relevant qualification matching the ANZSCO skill level for your nominated occupation.

How to Find Your Assessing Authority

Australia has over 40 designated assessing authorities. Your occupation determines which one you apply to. The quickest way to find yours is the Home Affairs assessing authorities page. You can also check the Core Skills Occupation List (CSOL).

  2. Get employment references right with specific duties on letterhead
  3. Start early and allow months before your target visa round
