We are pleased to announce and warmly welcome Simon Jeans as Special Counsel at One Planet Migration Law

Simon is widely regarded as one of Australia’s top immigration lawyers, renowned for his depth of expertise in this complex and ever-evolving field.  For those not as familiar with Simon’s extensive career and achievements, here are some key highlights:

  • A lawyer since 1989, Simon has specialised in immigration law for over 35 years.

  • He is recognised by the NSW Law Society as an Accredited Specialist in Immigration Law.

  • Appointed by the Governor-General, Simon served as a Member of the Migration Review Tribunal and Refugee Review Tribunal from 1 July 2010 to 30 June 2015.

  • His international experience includes working with the Jesuit Refugee Service in Hong Kong; as a Legal Consultant with the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees in Indonesia; and providing expert testimony before a U.S. Congressional Committee for International Relations in Washington D.C. on Indochinese refugee issues in Southeast Asia.

  • He has worked on immigration matters in Hong Kong, Indonesia, Iran, UK, Jordan, Syria, and Ukraine.  He has helped over 1,200 Sabean Mandaeans, a persecuted minority in Iraq, resettle in Australia through his numerous journeys to Jordan and Syria since 2004.

  • Since February 2016, Simon has been recognised annually on the “Best Lawyers in Immigration Law” list - an accolade voted by peers, further establishing him as one of the best immigration lawyers in the industry.

  • In 2019 and 2020, he served as an Assessor and External Moderator for the College of Law’s Capstone Migration Agents Assessment across all seven intakes.

  • Simon has frequently provided commentary on immigration issues across major media outlets, including Channel 7, Channel 9, Sky News Australia, The Australian, The Economist and the ABC.

  • In his spare time, he takes photos and is a contributor to iStock by Getty Images with images published in over 50 countries.
